The Artist is Dead! Is a pretty cool webcomic by Noah Farlee! It updates twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Woman was living a pretty normal life, or at least a peaceful one. Then the Witch appeared and gave her an important message; her world is a lie. She is one of the last creations of their artist, living in a world of paper and sketches… and the Artist is dead. Or to be more specific, killed by a monster called the Exquisite Corpse. And the only way to stop the Corpse is with the Woman’s help.
Literally shoved out of her fantasy world, the Woman travels and encounters other survivors of the Corpse’s rampage; the Figure, the Elderly Man, and the Child. They are the only things able to stop the Corpse and save what remains of the world, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can do it. But if they don’t… well. With any luck it’ll be over quickly.
This is a beautiful experimental comic. It plays with and pushes just about every aspect of the medium, from dialogue to panels to chapter order and the pages themselves, all without losing comprehension or pacing. There are some disorienting moments, but they piece together well with a review of the chapters (and there are not many chapters, so it’s a quick review). Also the characters and plot as a whole are deceptively simple, allowing for twists that can surprise the reader while still feeling natural.
This is a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in art and storytelling, and as it seems to be nearing the end this is as good a tim to dive in as any. There’s some frightening stuff, mainly in how the Corpse is designed, but otherwise should be suitable for anyone.
Oh, hey, cool! It’s my first review by someone I’ve never met before. ^__^
